Curious about raku firing? Join us for an immersive, hands-on workshop where you'll learn the fundamentals of this exciting and unpredictable ceramic firing process. Whether you're new to raku or looking to expand your skills, this workshop will answer your questions while introducing you to a variety of firing techniques, surface treatments, and glazing methods that create raku's signature effects.

We'll discuss clay bodies, how to minimize cracking, and the key elements that make a successful raku piece. Then you'll put your new knowledge into practice by glazing your own bisque-fired vase before experiencing the thrill of pulling it from the kiln and completing the reduction process.


Workshop Schedule

2:00–3:00 PM
Introduction to raku firing, including safety, firing techniques, glazing approaches, and surface finishes that produce a variety of colors, crackle patterns, and metallic effects.

3:00–3:30 PM
Each participant will receive a bisque-fired vase and learn simple glazing techniques before preparing it for firing.

3:30–6:00 PM
Experience the excitement of the raku firing process as participants take turns removing their pieces from the hot kiln and placing them into reduction containers. After the firing, we'll clean and reveal the finished pieces, discuss the results, and explore ideas for your next raku adventure.

Leave with a one-of-a-kind handmade vase, new skills, and the confidence to continue exploring the art of raku ceramics.
